\u00a0Is a couple dozen cookies fair for new soles on my shoes?\u201d\u00a0 I had been flapping around in my old loafers for a week now, and finally broke down.\u00a0 The village cobbler was an old guy named Gus, and I had been keeping my shoes going by Gus for about seven years now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I suppose the cookies would have to be pretty spectacular for both shoes.\u00a0 I\u2019d be happy to do one for a couple dozen chocolate chips.\u00a0 Leather these days, you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about I make it three dozen, and throw in some walnuts?\u201d\u00a0 I was feeling a little bit creative today, but living in a town with a local currency and free barter was just wearing me down.\u00a0 Maybe if I just offered to invite him over for Thanksgiving dinner.\u00a0 What\u2019s one more mouth when I could pay off all my debts in town with one big blowout of a meal and everyone got invited.<\/p>\n<p>Gus was on a roll. \u201cDo you have any cranberries?\u00a0 I\u2019d go for three dozen with chocolate chips, walnuts and cranberries!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDone,\u201d I said.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ll drop the shoes off this afternoon, and start baking.\u00a0 Any idea how long it might be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gus got a faraway look in his eyes, like he was imagining those cookies and a tall glass of cold milk.\u00a0 A sheen had broken out on his forehead.\u00a0 \u201cWell, Mother\u2019s making supper tonight, so I may have some extra time.\u00a0 How about tomorrow afternoon?\u00a0 Does that suit you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s fine.\u00a0 I\u2019ll stop by after work with the cookies.\u201d\u00a0 I headed out, making a mental note to not forget the shoes.\u00a0 I chuckled at that bit about Mother.\u00a0 Everyone in town knew that Gus, at sixty five, still lived at home with his mother who was pushing ninety.\u00a0 The old bat could still cook.<\/p>\n<p>It was a lovely day, with a clear blue sky.\u00a0 I headed off to the bookstore, meaning to get it opened and sorted by nine thirty.\u00a0 Folks usually straggled in on and off through the late morning, and I had some barter writing to do before then.\u00a0 That Farralon couple wanted a poem for their newborn son.\u00a0 That should be good for a chicken.<\/p>\n<p>I passed by the travel agency and looked at the posters in the window.\u00a0 I went by them every day, and never got tired of dreaming of far off places.\u00a0 I wondered which body part I would have to barter for a trip to the Pyramids.\u00a0 Had someone mentioned kidney trouble at the last town meeting?\u00a0 I could spare a lobe of liver for the town alky.\u00a0 Everyone knew he was a tight old miser who probably had the first penny he ever stole.\u00a0 It would be mighty satisfying to get him to stick a crowbar in his wallet just because he didn\u2019t know the meaning of the words moderation and temperance.\u00a0 I sure would like to see those pyramids, and maybe ride on a camel.<\/p>\n<p>The bell above the door dinged as I opened the store.\u00a0 I brought in a couple of boxes of old books dropped off by folks hoping for a credit.\u00a0 They always tried, but I hadn\u2019t found a real treasure in ten years. \u00a0Not since Old Lady Westerly started going blind and brought in her entire collection of signed Hemingways.\u00a0 I think she thought they were cookbooks.<\/p>\n<p>I started sorting, and tried to think of who I could get cranberries from.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2-28-13\u00a0 List exercise\u00a0 4 items Things that are old\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pyramids, Mom, big trees, Grandpa Color\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Blue Time of day\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Afternoon A barter\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cookies for new soles on your shoes &nbsp; \u201cSo, what do you think?
