Peter slid into the room, his movements compact and fluid.\u00a0 You would swear from looking at him that he was on roller skates as he headed for the bar.\u00a0 His eyes were focused on the neck of the woman in front of him.\u00a0 He shifted into full stealth mode and stopped an inch from her back.\u00a0 She sat, unknowing, her own eyes gazing into the martini sitting before her.\u00a0 His arm curved forward around her, pulling her body back against his.<\/p>\n

\u201cShit!\u201d, she shrieked, as the glass shattered and her salvation flowed across the bar.\u00a0 Her flying elbow caught him on the temple as he was bending to kiss her behind the ear.\u00a0 \u201cWhat the fuck are you trying to do, you prick!?\u201d<\/p>\n

Peter picked himself up off the floor and braced himself unsteadily between two stools.\u00a0 \u201cI just wanted to show you how much I care, sweetie.\u00a0 Geez, that was some hook.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, listen,\u201d said his fianc\u00e9 Bethany, \u201cif you want to sneak up on me, next time give me some warning.\u00a0 You could have been anyone!\u00a0 Think next time!\u201d<\/p>\n

Peter waved for the bartender and turned back to his love.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t thinking.\u00a0 Maybe we can get a table and I\u2019ll make it up to you.\u201d\u00a0 He turned back to the waiting bartender and said \u201cOne dry martini and a strawberry daiquiri, please.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be back in a sec.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couple moved over to a corner table and Peter pulled out a chair for Bethany.\u00a0 She accepted the gesture grudgingly.\u00a0 \u201cMust have been a bad day for her to be so abrasive\u201d, Peter thought to himself.\u00a0 These words would never pass his lips, especially in front of his love.\u00a0 She would skin him alive if she heard them.<\/p>\n

He turned and slid back over to the bar for their drinks.\u00a0 \u201cI wish I knew how he did that,\u201d thought Bethany.\u00a0 It was one of his endearing qualities a year ago.\u00a0 Now it just creeped her out.\u00a0 If he was sneaking up on her like that, who else was he sneaking up on?\u00a0 Had he wrapped those snake arms around another woman?\u00a0 If he did and she found out, he would wake up dead the next morning.\u00a0 Should she warn him?\u00a0 No, just let him find out.\u00a0 Now, what\u2019s expensive on the menu?<\/p>\n

Peter navigated his way back to the table with a little less smooth in his step and a splitting headache.\u00a0 Maybe he\u2019d feel better with some food in his stomach.\u00a0 Maybe she\u2019d be a little less grumpy if she had some food in her, too.\u00a0 He set the martini down in front of her, after letting her see him from ten feet away so his approach wouldn\u2019t startle her again.\u00a0 Sheesh.<\/p>\n

Bethany raised her glass and smiled broadly.\u00a0 \u201cTo us!\u201d\u00a0 Maybe that would soften his reaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo us,\u201d said Peter.\u00a0 Why were there two drinks in front of his eyes?\u00a0 Was that Bethany\u2019s sister sitting next to her?\u00a0 He drew his drink up to his lips and hit his cheek.\u00a0 He set the glass down in front of him, stared for a second, and his head fell forward, impaling itself on the stem of his daiquiri glass.\u00a0 There was no blood, just a stiff shudder, and sudden relaxation of every muscle in his body.\u00a0 The strawberry slush spread out across the table from under his face.<\/p>\n
