\u201cPlaymate, come out to play with me<\/b>.\u00a0 Tell your mother can you come out!\u00a0 I\u2019ve got the stick from my Ma\u2019s old broom, and we\u2019ll use your ball.\u00a0 All of the other kids in the gang are waiting down at the lot, except for Stinky and Max, cause they gotta work.\u201d<\/p>\n
The vacant lot between the tenements was our kingdom, and ocean, and battlefield, and Dodger Stadium.\u00a0 We had a blast, cause there were no adults around, except for the old cripple from down the block who came back from the war deaf and shakin\u2019.\u00a0 He keeps staggering up and down the block, and one day he even walked right in front of the ice wagon and almost got run over by the horse.\u00a0 He\u2019s harmless, though, and he never bothers us when we\u2019re playin\u2019.\u00a0 He even smiled at me once.<\/p>\n
Today, we had enough for two teams, even if they were small teams.\u00a0 I decided to be Babe Ruth, even if I am a girl.\u00a0 He coulda been a girl if he was born one.\u00a0 And he\u2019d probably be the greatest girl baseball player of all time, too.\u00a0 So I\u2019m gonna be him.\u00a0 Teddy, I bet, wants to be Joe DiMaggio.\u00a0 He\u2019s always spouting off about how Joltin\u2019 Joe is the best, but I know he\u2019s fulla baloney.\u00a0 I\u2019m the world\u2019s greatest.\u00a0 Anyone who says I ain\u2019t will get a punch in the kisser.<\/p>\n
When I got home, Ma had a whole pile of clothes to iron and fold, so I helped her fold.\u00a0 I tried to help\u00a0 her iron once, but she didn\u2019t appreciate it too much. I don\u2019t want anyone to think I\u2019m useless, and throw me in an orphanage.\u00a0 That would be awful.<\/p>\n
I went next door to my friend Dottie\u2019s house, except it ain\u2019t really a house.\u00a0 It\u2019s a walkup just like I got.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know anyone who really owns a whole house.\u00a0 Gee, that would be swell.\u00a0 So I says to Dottie, her real name is Dorothy, but if I call her that she gets all heated up, and doesn\u2019t play with me.\u00a0 So I says, grab your coat, and bring your dollies three<\/b>, and we\u2019ll play like we\u2019re Mrs. Hoffmeier from down the block, and take the kids for a walk to the park, except we can\u2019t really go to the park cause my mother says its too far to go alone, and she\u2019s still busy ironing and folding.<\/p>\n
Dottie had her dolls in the carriage, and didn\u2019t we look special strolling up and down the sidewalk like we was something.\u00a0 The old cripple went by once, and he smiled at the dolls in the carriage, and smiled at us and drooled a bit.<\/p>\n
When we got tired of strolling with the children, I told Dottie it was probably time to go home for supper, and I\u2019d see her tomorrow, and maybe we could have an adventure in the park with the children and even go sailing on the ocean.\u00a0 We\u2019ll climb my apple tree<\/b>, and watch Tom Mix at the theatre.<\/p>\n
I ran home, and Ma had finished folding, so I put clothes away for a while, then just sat with her in the kitchen.\u00a0 I told her all of the adventures I had with the gang, and how I wanted to be Babe Ruth when I grew up, and how me and Dottie looked so grand as we took the children out for a constitutional.\u00a0 Ma smiled a lot, and just kept boiling the meat and cabbage for supper.\u00a0 It\u2019s usually just us, cause Pa has to work so hard, and he doesn\u2019t get home until it\u2019s time for bed, and then he comes in and reads a bit of the newspaper to me and kisses me on the forehead.\u00a0\u00a0 Bedtime sure seems to come early when you have a whole day of fun.<\/p>\n
